A production designer creates the mood, atmosphere and visual framework of a film or television production through the expressive use of interior and exterior environments, objects, light, shapes and colors. Through the use of set design, props, graphics and in collaboration with, special effects, costume and mask design, the production designer gives the production a coordinated visual expression. Working in set design and design for film and television is largely about teamwork and to some extent about supervision.

The Master's Programme in Film and Media, with specialisation in Production Design

The Master's Programme in Film and Media is an artistically advanced and research-oriented programme with a common programme structure for all specializations.

The specialisation in production design is one of the team specialisations within the master's programme that forms film teams and collaborations. This is done in the practical lab courses, where the different specialisations work together to explore storytelling and design in film and media. You can choose to design environments for different types of film, using space, place, architecture and objects as narrative tools. You will work with, for example, fiction, documentary and art films - for different platforms and in short and long formats. You will gain an in-depth knowledge of filmmaking as a process from script to finished film.

The program also has methodology courses specific to the specialisation. As a master's student in production design, you will deepen your knowledge of visual storytelling in subjects such as spatial design, architecture, drawing and model making, research, visual idea development and concept design. Insights and knowledge gained in the courses specific to the specialisation are applied in the team-based lab courses.

The programme's research methods courses introduce different perspectives on knowledge, theory, reflection and artistic research methods. The courses are partly given jointly for all master's programs at Stockholm University of the Arts. Here you can meet master students and research in, for example, dance, performing arts, acting, opera, circus and choreography.

During the elective courses, you also have the opportunity to meet students from other artistic fields. Each student identifies his or her own need for further knowledge and chooses a course from the range offered by the university.

During the final semester of the program, you will complete an individual degree project in the form of an exposition and a master's essay in text, sound and/or image.

The programme will provide you with specialized knowledge that will prepare you for artistic research and for working in the field of film scenography/production design.
