Art and academia – a complicated relationship?
Theme: Art and academia – a complicated relationship? (15 October 2020)
In May, Bogdan Szyber's Documented Artistic Research Project (Doctoral Thesis) "Fauxthentication – Art, Academia & Authorship (or the site-specifics of the Academic Artist)" was rejected by the invited external Examination Committee. It was a unique event, which highlighted the not always uncomplicated relationship between the art world and artistic research.
What happens when artists are invited to academic institutions and are allowed to call themselves researchers? Is it an opportunity for immersion and reflection that can lead to more interesting art? Or will it rather be a kind of straitjacket that wants to academicize the artist?
Welcome to a conversation with this year's hottest art debate as a starting point!
On stage
Bogdan Szyber, Visual artist and rejected PhD candidate
Lars O Ericsson, Artist, art critic and associate professor of practical philosophy
Maria Lantz, Vice-Chancellor at Konstfack
The conversation is led by Erik Gandini and Lotta Erikson, Stockholm University of the Arts.
