Gestures of exchange

Gestures of exchange is a Research project by Cecilia Roos and Jan Burkhardt.
Studio in Berlin

The project investigates how dancers develop and share methods during an artistic process. The co-researcher is Jan Burkhardt. The research is based on a previous project (Relational trajectories) and here special interest is directed towards the dancer's way of creating methods for interpretation in artistic processes. In his teaching and as a choreographer, Jan Burkhardt has created methods for working with each dancer's subjective experience as a working material in the artistic process, and Jan's experience is of great importance for this study. In some discourses in the dance field, the exchange of these individual methods between dancers is fundamental to the choreographic process.

Aim and research questions

The aim is to explore dancers' exchange of methods during an artistic process and the research questions remain from previous projects but are deepened here through the collaboration with Jan Burkardt. How does the dancer process his/her experience of a movement in order to perform it, and in what ways does the dancer develop methods during that process? In what ways do dancers share, transform and coordinate working methods during an artistic process?

Research implementation and anticipated impact

The project is carried out by observing and discussing each other's artistic and pedagogical work. The results of these observations will be tested in workshops on two different occasions: one week in February 2016 in Stockholm and one week in Berlin in June 2016, and in these workshops methods for collaboration between dancers in artistic processes will be developed.
