”Abstract narration, Towards Implicit Cinema” by Mamdooh Afdile

”Abstract narration, Towards Implicit Cinema” is a research project by Mamdooh Afdile, Assistant Professor of Film and Media.

This artistic research is part of a research group in the film and media department at SKH exploring Abstract Narratives. The group includes Thomas Brennan, Anders Bohman, and Klas Dykhoff. My part of the research is entitled Implicit cinema. It explores new ways to overcome the limitation of films being a concrete artistic medium. The study is done in the context of previous attempts in cinema history to create abstract films.

Aim and research questions

How to create a visually ambiguous film that can enjoy the qualities found in an abstract painting?
Is there a third film viewing mode (besides spectatorship and observation) unique for viewing and enjoying visually ambiguous films?

Research implementation and anticipated impact

This is an attempt to find a new approach to abstract film viewing by using scientific findings from the audience psychology field and computer science methodology (AI algorithms). The project strives to create an experience that engages the spectator's imagination and contributes to its well-being.
