PhD Projects
The Tangibility of the Digital
PhD project by Paola Torres Núñez del Prado involving the developing of transcultural interfaces that elucidate a divergent history of technology.
In my research I explore the concept of Smart Fiber Arts (related to Wearables), its relation to voice and sound, and the role of Human Computer Interaction in performance set-ups. my point of departure has been the study of the pre-Columbian devices called “khipus”, a tactile, cord-based data storing system coded with knots in order to engage with a different branch in the development of human technologies, one that sprouts from an essentially fiber-based origin, which is relevant as there are multiple artists referencing such technology up to date.
Aim and research questions
The aim of this research is to question the given history of technology and art now seen from a transdisciplinary perspective, this is being done by delving into different cultural traditions and practices, so to reformulate and go beyond the anthropocentric origin of today's technology. In such a novel, post-discplinary framework, I develop devices that are both works of art and technological objects that deviate from a worldview that does not place man at the centre, but part of an interconnected environment.
Research implementation and anticipated impact
The research consists of developing interactive textile based interactive devices for sound generation and manipulation. These are being presented in diverse countries as part of artistic exhibitions, performances, symposiums, or conferences.
