LETTER FROM JULIETTE MAPP

I want to say a few words about the vision for this conference and the reasons behind naming it Alliances and Commonalities.

I think that the field of Artistic Research is in the process of trying to create environments where we can learn form, be inspired by, challenge and influence each other.  This conference was created as an opportunity for us all to hear about new ideas, learn about different methods, ask questions and listen to what somebody else has to say about their research and our own.

The importance of connecting to each other is central to the conference, but we also cared about how what we do may engage and influence the world beyond the field of Artistic Research.  I thought about how important it is to be critical of our own work and that of our peers within and beyond our institutions to be sure our research is as transparent, accessible and impactful as possible.

Coming from the United States I am acutely aware of how systems of violence, xenophobia, racism, misogyny, and homophobia continue to manifest themselves in institutions and structures of power.  It is in these divisive times that we need art and artists the most, and it is at this moment when Artistic Research is poised to be increasingly influential by modeling an ethical discourse based on curiosity, civility, engagement, and something that hopefully will never go out of style, the pursuit of knowledge.

In the spirit of sharing and celebrating let´s raise a glass—I hope this time gives you a chance to ask some new questions and find some new alliances.  Because we need each other.

Thank you for being here.
