Ways of Knowing – SKH meets VIS
The seminar is part of the seminar series “Ways of knowing Spring 2025” where we every Wednesday this Spring explore how Ways of Knowing manifest themselves in the field of artistic research right now. Read more about the seminar series and find upcoming seminars.
At this third inter-institutional research seminar during spring 2025, the focus will be on language in artistic research. SKH’s Vice Rector for Research, Anne Gry Haugland, has invited Tale Næss, Norwegian dramaturg, playwright, and author, as well as editor of the upcoming issue of VIS – Nordic Journal for Artistic Research, which has the theme LANGUAGE/LANGUAGED/LANGUAGING.
From the Open Call for VIS #15:
In this issue, we are looking for contributions that explore the role of language in artistic research. This could be artistic research that experiments with language as a tool for reflection, that goes against it and/or moves around it. That operates with polylingual approaches or questions the position language has had, especially within artistic research.
Language is often used to bridge the gap between artistic practice and reflection, both to contextualize the research and communicate research results. More often than not, this entails an act of translation. As in all translations, the praxis can get lost in the process of turning artistic events into language. We are looking for contributions that examine what is lost in this process. Contributions that explore what can be found, and those that look at ways of bridging or exploring the gap between doing art and making language. We are also interested in explorations that consider language as a tool for reflection or as artistic exploration in itself.
Anne Gry Haugland’s research has explored language as a form of communication, artistic material, and – through her interest in natural philosophy and biosemiotics – as a natural form. She has also focused specifically on reflective and linguistic forms in artistic research. At the seminar, Anne Gry and Tale will present and discuss their work on language and reflection in relation to the VIS call.
Tale Næss holds a PhD in artistic research with a focus on playwriting from the Theatre Department at Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo. Næss has published poetry, novels, and two collections of dramatic texts for both stage and radio. She has also written opera librettos and film scripts, collaborating with musicians, composers, performers, and visual artists on various projects. Additionally, she has created dramatic installation works for voice, web, and stage.
Anne Gry Haugland holds a PhD in literature from the University of Copenhagen and has since worked in the fiels of artistic research with a particular focus on forms of knowledge and reflection.
