Keys to power
The 2024 degree performance in opera will be an Italian evening on Wermland Opera's main stage, with music by Donizetti, Bellini and Wolf-Ferrari.
Together with director Stina Ancker, the students will present scenes from three different operas that in different ways tell the story of women who are about to lose control of their lives.
The theme of the evening is cast in the form of drama, tragedy and finally absurd comedy.
Three Italian operas
Two of the operas offer brilliant bel canto and are set in the Renaissance era: in Anna Bolena by Gaetano Donizetti, the death sentence is getting closer and closer to Queen Anne Boleyn, wife of Henry VIII, and in I Capuleti & I Montecchi, Vincenzo Bellini's version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Romeo wants to escape with his Juliet and take her away from her family.
The third opera, Le donne curiose by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, was composed at the turn of the last century. The piece has one foot in bourgeois salon comedy and the other in commedia dell'arte. When the husbands ban women from their gentlemen's club, the ladies of the town do everything they can to get the key to the club...
Conductor Andreas Hansson leads the singers and the Wermland Opera Orchestra. Stina Ancker, lecturer in music drama, has previously directed The Cavaliers of Ekeby, Cinderella and A Minor Scandal at Wermland Opera.
