Documentation, or Working with the Wind meets Image as Site

Documentation, or Working with the Wind meets Image as Site

This seminar is a part of the SKH's Spring 2024: Wednesday Research Seminar series (WRS).

During the spring of 2024, we are holding weekly interdisciplinary research seminars that are organised and led by professors in the research profile areas. A new theme is discussed each term.

WRS welcomes all SKH teachers, senior researchers, PhDs, MA students, and an invited public, WRS are SKHs primary context for encountering the research happening within and in relation to SKH.

WRS provides a regular time and space for internal and external researchers to come together to share a variety of practices, perspectives and approaches, to identify affinities and differences, to raise common lines of enquiry, and to engage in critical discourse and intersubjective dialogue across an array of themes, subject areas and artistic disciplines.

Documentation, or Working with the Wind meets Image as Site

Who: Florian Dombois and Ellen Roed
Subject area: Film and Media.
Host: Rebecca Hilton

Florian Dombois, is a Professor, Head of FSP Transdisciplinarity - Department of Cultural Analysis and Mediation, Zurich University of the Arts, and an artist who works with time, landforms, labilities, seismic and tectonic activity, as well as on their various representational and media formats.

Ellen Røed is a Pro Vice-Chancellor at SKH. Her artistic research revolves around the moving image and manifests across various artistic disciplines including visual arts, music, theater, film, dance, media art. She collaborates in many different constellations and as a result, her work is both subject-specific and interdisciplinary.

The Wind is invisible. The moment, you stop it, it disappears. The wind makes us imagine. It is a medium for projection. At Zurich University of the Arts, Florian Dombois has constructed a wind tunnel as an artistic lab. Here he studies the wind as a topic, while using it also as a metaphor for research. How can we get in dialogue with the wind? In his presentation Dombois will introduce some of his wind tunnel studies and discuss his ongoing research project of sound kites, that he flies on long piano wires.

Revisiting her long term research projects Processing change and Image as Site, Ellen Røed will reflect upon her aim of working with documentation as an inherent part of the research. As part of these research projects she has spent days and nights at various locations, working with devices such as solar trackers and wind driven camera rigs, thinking about image-making through attempting to collaborate with these elements. She thinks of the resulting films as documentation in their own right while she grapples with other forms of manifestations of the research.
