General Public

General Public

As part of her 80% seminar Linn Hilda Lamberg shares her work General Public. General Public is a participatory and immersive performance in the form of a staging of the classic ballet Swan Lake.

GENERAL PUBLIC draws its inspiration from the turbulence of our time and pairs this with the special significance of Swan Lake in the former Soviet Union. The ballet was then used by the state TV as an intermission broadcasting in times of national crisis, like at the sudden death of Leonid Brezhnev or the August 1991 coup as well as when conservative communist leaders tried to oust President Mikhail Gorbachev (where the ballet was broadcasted over and over again for 72 hours). Originally intended to have a calming effect on the population, it soon took on a different, ominous meaning: something has happened, but no one is telling us what it is.
