Documentary Processes - Experimentation in reality
The course profile Documentary processes is aimed at documentary makers, artists and journalists who want to deepen and develop their knowledge of contemporary reality storytelling in theory and practice.
The emphasis of the course profile is on students investigating and deepening their own artistic processes in a personal narrative and independently reflecting on and describing their work in the form of documented questions and analyses.
Documentary processes contribute to the development of ideas and practices in various aspects of artistic exploration and narrative. The students will seek their own tone, presence and expression. The course uses the experimentation and reflection as a method of developing new thoughts in the work and the depiction of reality and ideas about forms of documentary expression.
Course profile structure
Alongside a continuous artistic development project, the students will discuss artistic courage, idea work and an ethical approach. The students will put their own practice in relation to others, study various artistic methods and formulate their own. Critical reflection will give the students the foundation for deepening their own practical work and their ambition to develop the art form. The studies will mostly be conducted individually.
Like the other course profiles on the Master’s Programme in Film and Media, Documentary processes includes four longer courses: Practical knowledge, Elective courses, Independent project and Production.
In Documentary processes the independent project may constitute a detailed study of a process in the students’ own practical artistic work. To explore a development in their own narrative. The study may also contain comparisons with the work and methods of others and reflections on this. The project is based on a research question and is presented in the form of practical work and written text.
Within the Production course, the students complete a work process with an artistic idea. The work, which must be investigative and assessment and process oriented, spans all four semesters. Under supervision, the students will develop their creative processes and formulate and solve advanced artistic and interpretative (figuration) problems. The central part of the course is the process in which the students will demonstrate their ability to experiment in storytelling and interpretation (figuration).
