Introduction to Circus Direction

Introduction to Circus Direction

Are you interested in circus directing? This course is aimed at those who want to develop an awareness of creative methods and processes within circus directing. It includes a practical project of directing other students from the school.

In this course you will theoretically and practically explore issues, concepts and methods in the artistic directing process within circus. What is a director's responsibility towards the audience, the artists and the co-creators? What is their responsibility to the vision?

The course deals with concepts such as artistic strata, visioning, group process, communication strategies, dramaturgy, co-creation, conceptualisation, composition and artistic leadership. During the course, you will meet different "impulse givers" and directors from the circus industry with different inputs in circus directing who will share their own methods and practices. Sometimes these meetings have more focus on theory and sometimes they are more physical.

As a student, you are expected to bring relevant experiences to your own work. The course also deals with the logistical conditions for a circus performance. As a student, you also gain practical experience through collaboration and co-creation with other students and/or professional circus artists in the implementation of a directing project.

Course director

Daniel Gulko, leader of the French-based mongrel circus, Cahin-Caha has been invited to lead this course, bringing extensive international experience with marginal forms of circus performance, creation and education.

Daniel has been working since 40 years in the interstices of experimental circus, body theatre and modern ritual in a form he names "Zen-anarcho-surrealism", Gulko has criss-crossed the globe provoking new equations between cultures, beings and expression. He has taught and directed at numerous Circus and Art Schools: Codarts (Netherlands), JAMU (Czech Republic), CNAC and Ecole d’Art d’Aix en Provence (France), ESAC (Belgium), ENC (Canada).

Co-instigator of the European research projects LACRIMAE and CARE (with Circus Cirkör and Cirk Laputyka), his major and minor creations have played across Europe, North America and Asia. Gulko has developed a humanist et sensitive art, dedicated to the joyous orchestration of chaos.
